Plumeria - The Lei Flower Tree
Frangipani or the less scientific Plumeria is a type of tropical flower. Plumeria as a flower is one of the most gorgeous and sweet smelling of any flower. You may find this flower in white, pink, red, yellow, or a myriad of different options. The scent of the Plumeria has been likened to roses with a hint of coconut, spices, and other fragrances.
There is an assumption that the Plumeria is from Hawaii. However, studies have shown that while the plant grows there it is not native. The plant is most likely from South America or Central America. The exact origin of the Plumeria is still unknown. Hawaii does have profuse amounts of Plumeria on their shores. Many of the Frangipani are grown for commercial purposes on the Islands. Plumeria can grow in tropical locations, but are not able to grow in colder locals without a greenhouse. They have no tolerance for frost or lower temperatures.
Plumeria is considered a good plant for you to have, especially if you are new at it. They are not as delicate as other flowers can be. The plant is usually very popular among growers because of its vibrant color choices and scents. If you are going to grow the plant in a colder climate remember that you need a greenhouse or other warm location. In colder weather they can live in a dormant state, which means they will not flower. In the spring months they will come back to life. The plant does not require a great deal of time and energy, just a little water, and the granular fertilizer once a month after it reaches 1 to 2 years old.
When looking for a Plumeria plant you will want to get a cutting from a local grower or nursery. They will usually cut you a section that is 15″ in length. It can also be stored for about a year before you actually pot it. The rooting takes over very easily with a 50 percent sand and 50 percent soil mixture. You want the plant roots to be 3″ into the soil and no further. You do not want to over water the plant during this process. It can rot easily. In fact you should not water the plant until it has grown leaves. However, if you are in a particularly hot climate you can water the plant every two to three days. You should keep the soil dry most of the time. The plant will take root in 6 weeks, maybe a little more. To tell if the plant takes root, you just have to wait for leaves to start growing.
After the Plumeria begins to grow you will need to establish a water and feeding schedule. It is not difficult and Plumeria care requires little time. Just look for dry soil and then water the plant. The watering could occur every few days or as little as every week. It will depend on your climate whether it is dry, hot, wet, or cool. You need to consider the root ball. A large root may need a larger container in which the soil will need more moisture. You just don’t want the Plumeria to be wet all the time. Let it become dry occasionally. To get better flowers you will need fertilization for your plant. It needs a lot of nutrients, such as 10-50, as the 10 will offer better branching and flowers. You will need to offer fertilizer 1 to 2 times in a month.
